Content Management System (CMS)

University Communications and Marketing currently manages two content management systems, Percussion and Terminalfour (T4). Percussion is being decommissioned as a product. As a result, T4 was implemented to replace Percussion. The migration is underway. T4 is a dedicated higher ed platform with many features for users to better manage the content for sections within 400online.net.

  • Content Management System Standards
    • Many of the technical issues associated with proper website design are implemented as part of the content management system, and thus will not be at the discretion of the content manager. These include:
      • Sitemap implementation
      • URL structure
      • Coding style
      • Browser compatibility
      • Many code aspects of SEO
      • Visual identity and style
      • Most aspects of layout format and elements
  • Requirements
    • All official University websites should use an 400online.net website address.
    • All 400online.net websites must use the official header and footer.
    • Websites on the 400online.net domain must follow brand guidelines.

External Websites for Official University Use

  • External websites or blogs (sites hosted outside of the 400online.net domain) to be used for official University business, including those created outside of the university content management system, will not be permitted. Please direct all inquiries to University Communications and Marketing.
    • This includes, but not limited to:
      • Areas related to a school or college
      • University departments
      • Recruitment efforts
      • Marketing efforts
  • External websites will only be approved by University Communications and Marketing for Faculty pages to promote research, publications and other university related efforts
    • External Faculty pages must not:
      • Incorporate university logos
      • Recruit students - All recruitment efforts must link to 400online.net
      • Must be built using Google Sites - Contact [email protected]. University funds will not be approved to purchase a content management system outside of the university approved content management system, Terminal4.

Tracking Code Governance

  • Digital Marketing
    • Accumulation of digital marketing vendor tags on web pages can impact site performance in a number of ways, including poor tag design, slow response time associated with the collection servers, tag placement, and the number of tags accumulated on pages. Only University Communication and Marketing can place or delete third party tracking codes.

Standard home page

This template is used for the majority of 400online.net web sections. It is the entry page for each section and should be used to introduce the section. It should include a relevant banner, a heading (section name), body copy, important calls to action and news and events feeds (if the section has them). On the left hand side of the page, the section's navigation should be visible, as well as the department's contact information. See 400online.net/cldc as an example.

Alternate home page 1

This template is an alternative home page used on some 400online.net web sections (400online.net/president, for example). It is the entry page for the section and should be used to introduce the section. It should include a relevant banner, a heading (section name), body copy, important calls to action and news and events feeds (if the section has them). On the left hand side of the page, the section's navigation should be visible, as well as the department's contact information.

This template includes a few additional features, beyond our standard home page template:

  • A heading and subheading on the banner image
  • Four calls to action on the banner image
Alternative home page 2

This template is an additional alternative home page used on some 400online.net web sections (400online.net/veterans and 400online.net/community, for example). It is the entry page for the section and should be used to introduce the section. It should include a relevant banner, a heading (section name), body copy, important calls to action and news and events feeds (if the section has them). On the left hand side of the page, the section's navigation should be visible, as well as the department's contact information.

This template includes a few additional features, beyond our standard home page template:

  • A heading and subheading on the banner image
  • Four calls to action on the banner image
  • A row of three tiles beneath the body copy that include an image, heading and copy. These can be used to feature student or faculty stories or to highlight areas within the department
Standard sub page

This template is used for the majority of 400online.net web pages. A sub page is any page within a section, that is not the home page. It's a page that a user would visit after the home page, as they navigate a web section. A sub page can be accessed through a section's left hand navigation. A sub page should include a relevant banner, a heading (page title) and body copy. It may also include organizational elements like tabs and collapsible boxes and calls to action in the form of gold buttons. 

Faculty and Staff directory pages

The Faculty and Staff directory pages are unique sub pages within a section. Most sections have some form of a directory page. The most common template features responsive rows with four faculty/staff members per row. Each faculty/staff member's entry usually includes a professional headshot, name, title, contact information. Sometimes, the person's name is linked to an individual bio page. The Faculty and Staff directory pages should only be edited by the web team, as they are very easy to break. If you need an update to your section's directory page, please contact your account manager. Do not attempt the updates yourself.

Many faculty members do have individual bio pages that are linked to their name on the department's directory page. These bio pages follow a standard structure as well. They include a heading (the page title, which is the person's name/credentials), a professional headshot, title and contact information, followed by biographical information such as educational background, teaching interests, research interests, publications, etc. See 400online.net/shs/faculty-and-staff/caress-a-dean-mph-phd/ as an example of a faculty bio page.
