Oakland University is one of the safest colleges in the country, according to rankings published by AcademicInfluence.com. The website ranked OU seventh on its 2024 list of the 15 safest colleges in America.
Oakland was the only Michigan school to appear on the list, with Purdue University claiming the top spot. The rankings were based on factors such as on-campus safety resources, compliance with safety protocols and past crime statistics.
According to Oakland University Police Chief Mark Gordon, the safest campus rating is evidence that the OU campus community realizes that safety is everyone's responsibility.
“True safety can only be achieved when community members partner with the police to make a community safe,” Gordon said. “We are very fortunate that our community takes safety so seriously.”
All schools listed “are in compliance with the Clery Act, an act that strives to provide students and staff with transparent information about campus crime policy and statistics,” AcademicInfluence.com reported.
The website noted that OU promotes campus safety and security in various ways, including SAFEwalk escort, blue light emergency phones, infrastructure security and cybersecurity.
